WEST SACRAMENTO -- The Astros’ rotation took another hit Monday when right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. was placed on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to Friday, with a right foot sprain.

McCullers Jr. is the seventh Houston starter to land on the injured list, with two (Hayden Wesneski and Ronel Blanco) out for 2025 due to elbow surgery. McCullers was scheduled to start Monday’s series opener against the Athletics at Sutter Health Park, but right-hander Ryan Gusto -- originally slated to pitch Tuesday -- will draw the start instead.

McCullers had made seven starts with a 4.91 ERA since returning from the IL on May 4. He missed all of the 2023 and 2024 seasons after undergoing flexor tendon surgery, then suffering a setback.
